Sarah McNaboe, winner of the 2024 Wahine Skipper of the Year Trophy.
Aloha Kakou,
We've reached then end of our 2023 series and I would like to start with Congratulating Melody Fernandez for her stellar commitment to sailing by competing in every regatta completing a total of 24 races, with finishes mid-fleet or higher in nearly every regatta.
I would have to dig deep to find the last time someone has competed in every regatta, if it's ever been accomplished in the history of our series.
I would also like to recognize Vivian Bonsager and Brantley Baynes who both sailed over the minimum 12 races to qualify for the trophy. Worth mentioning are also Maddy Kennedy, Tarah McGreggor, Sarah McNaboe who join me in participating in at least 3 regattas. HYSA phenom Noe Velasco shined in the UH FJ and PHYC Laser regattas. It was great to have Noe represent our youth sailors. I can count on 1 hand the number of HYSA skippers we had competing and she may be the 1st to enter more than 1 regatta.
7 boats participated in the Pau Regatta - 5 in PHRF A and 2 PHRF B. The forecasted light day turned out to be one of the best days for our series- not too light/ not too heavy, but pretty much just right! Unfortunately, 3 of our competitors had gear issues and weren't able to complete all the races of the day.
We saw a number of new participants this year- skippers and crew, as part of our fleet of 30 skippers in all. Hopefully all everyone- new or returning, enjoyed the series and plan to continue competing next year. As always, I encourage our boat owners and skippers to consider filling a spot with someone new to their crew. As Kerri has shown on Firefly, there are hidden gems, (sometimes diamonds in the rough) sailing in other clubs who can complement a program and/or become valued regulars.
... This reminds me of PYC & PHYC ladies coming out in force for the Lahaina's Return Fundraising Day at KYC- yes ladies!
As always, we encourage any interested sailor to look into joining our Steering Committee.
I'd like to close with our deepest thanks to all the boat owners, race committees, and clubs who support our series now and throughout the years.
Have a wonderful holiday season and we hope to see you all on the water in 2024.
A hui hou e malama pono,
Leslie and your Wahine Sailing Series Steering Committee
Congratulations Mercy Tangredi of the UH Sailing Team for winning the Wahine Skipper of the Year for 2022. With a final score of 24 points (after throw outs), Mercy edged out over Leah Ford by 6 points. I join Mercy and Leah as one of 3 skippers who participated in at least 9 races, thus qualifying for the Skipper of the Year. The three of us were amongst 10 skippers who sailed in 2 or more regattas this year.
Mercy will be awarded the North Sails Perpetual Wahine Skipper of the Year Trophy at the HYRA banquet at KYC on November 19th. I hope many of you will be there to congratulate Mercy in person.
Again, Congratulations Mercy!

Aloha to all the wahine skippers & crews, to all our boat owners and fellow crew kane, to our yacht clubs and our outstanding Race Committees, for making our Wahine Racing Series of 2016 full of fun, camaraderie, and great racing. What I love best about this series is seeing new wahine joining in on the fun and discovering the joy of sailing- racing that is! 2nd best is racing with this great group of strong incredible women!
Congratulations to Maddy Kennedy, and her Kahuna crew, for your win in the Wahine Pau Regatta. You are part of an awesome Kahuna 'ohana and it was wonderful to have you out on the course with us again.
Now looking forward to 2017! All interested members of this awesome group are invited to join in on Wednesday, Nov. 16 for a get together to converse about ideas and proposals for next season. The gathering will be at North Sails (742 Queen St., 3rd flr.) at 5:30 pm. Please lmk if you can attend, so I know who to expect. And, Finally, my biggest hugs and congratulations go out to Christin for being 2016's Wahine Skipper of the Year! You and your crew rocked every race you did!
Best wishes for a full and quick recovery from your long overdue shoulder surgery. Thanks for putting off the surgery till after the Pau Regatta, it wouldn't have been the same without you.
Hope to see many of you at the mtg. and /or at the HYRA banquet this Saturday @ KYC, where Christin will officially receive her trophy.
A hui hou

Thank you to the yacht clubs, race committees, and sailors that have supported us all year long. I think this series has become more than the sum of its parts - which is a true testament to the wahine spirit and the racers that come out each day. It makes me really proud to be a part of this group! Email coming soon for organizing next year's planning committee... if I didn't get your name and contact info Sunday, let me know if you'd like to be included.
*note, this corrects results I provided Sunday, I calculated Lauren's average points for 2 races she was unable to sail during IRF incorrectly earlier. Average points for races sailed during the season given upon US Sailing Protest Committee review.
Mahalo Nui Katie for the awesome recap of the year & stepping up to the plate again, to make it all happen! Your energy & management helps make this the best series to race in... because we like to have fun, support each other, show our talents in a range of boats,.....and race hard.
Mahalo Nui Benton, for your admin. work, a great NOS, and showing our wahine how to be a new mom & a sailing rock star too. Thanks Matthew for supporting your woman!
(I remember my 1st "new mom" race- it was a wahine regatta! I think our baby sitter, Cole Slater, was more exhausted than we were at the end of the day... and Fizz wasn't even crawling yet!)
Mahalo Nui to everyone who stepped up to contribute to the steering committee. Wether what you brought to the table came to fruition or not, your contribution is greatly appreciated. New blood equals new ideas & energy and strong momentum for the whole. Mahalo for helping to keep this series alive & growing strong.
ALL YOU WAHINE ROCK!
Congrats again to Cecilia for winning the year & Graduating from UH! :->
Yay Jenny, you made the leap!
I hope to get out there in 2015, & mix it up with our awesome wahine sailors, and I hope to see many new wahine on the race course & in the skipper's seat.
Aloha & Happy New Year to all
I am so elated to have yesterday's results and the results of the 2013 series!
First & Foremost- the 2013 Wahine Racing Series saw competition between 20 of O'ahu's amazing wahine skippers supported by many more awesome wahine and kane crew, boat owners, race committees and supporters.
Mahalo to all for helping to make this some of the best sailing in Hawaii.
This year we saw new benchmarks in the ages of skippers: our youngest skipper(s) ever...spanking the Cal 20 fleet; and our eldest skippers mixing it up in the big boats. Very nice.
We saw the transformation of our Cal 20 fleet consisting of so few boats with a "3rd crew" male, that I made a preliminary announcement that the Cal 20 race would become a “females only” race. (This will be an agenda item for the steering committee.) I look forward to seeing the crews that did have a male onboard do just as well next year as they did this year. I know they can!
Next- a terrific turn out for the WYC Pau Big Boat Regatta: 7 boats and 4 yacht clubs represented! Our year has been great with fleets of 10 Cal 20s, 5 IRF’s, 6 Catalina 14s & 7 Big boats. Welcome to our 9 new skippers in the series, 3 of them in the Big Boat regatta. Again Very Nice!
Thank you WYC and our race committee of Hideki (PRO) & Ted. My apologies to you and the skippers for my error in not realizing that the NOS still stood at 2 races for the Big Boat regatta, and posting the NOR as a 3 race regatta. (And it didn’t help that WYC does not usually work with NOS’s) Thankfully, the skippers and race committee were able to rectify the discrepancy and make a great day of sailing.
Looking forward- Katie Greenlee-Cruise will be presented the North Sails Perpetual Wahine Skipper of the Year trophy next Saturday at the HYRA banquet, Please help her celebrate if you can make the banquet.
I am looking forward to a dynamite 2014. WYC has offered to host a Cal 20 regatta with their new club boats, I hope to have this finalized soon. PHYC is not throwing in the towel and will hopefully be back on the schedule next year. We will speak with HYC about their Sweetheart’s race and review including that in the series. The NOS will be reviewed for adjustments, (and hopefully I won’t mess up NOR’s anymore).
Please join us! I invite anyone who is interested in assisting with the planning and/or decision making to come join our steering committee. We did not have a formal meeting last year, so we are due. I hope to have the meeting ASAP as the HYRA calendar planning is underway. Please let me know right away in case we have a meeting this week.
No way to show enough thanks- to our boat owners, our yacht clubs, our fleets, our crews and our support teams: please help me in extending heartfelt thanks for allowing us to show our talents and enthusiasm.. and great camaraderie!
Attached- the season’s results: please don’t let the colors confuse you. (Red blocks are throw outs, 3rd race of Pau big boat is not included in series. Green blocks are DNCs)

Congratulations to Benton Whitesides Widlansky, who will be awarded the North Sails Wahine Skipper of the Year perpetual trophy at the HYRA banquet next Saturday, Nov. 17 @ WYC.
Benton finished the series with a commanding 17 pts. over 2nd place (26 pts). Go to "Files" in this group page to see the season's results.
Mahalo to the 18 skippers who participated in the series this year, 7 of whom helmed 2 or more races.
I know that all of you join me in my acknowledgement and THANKS to our crews & boat owners, yacht clubs and race committees who make our races and all of Hawaii's sailboat racing possible.
I hope to see many of you at the banquet applauding for Benton (tickets can be reserved through WYC) and on the race course next year- in both the Wahine Series and in HYRA races.
As always, if you'd like to help out, drop me a note.
Aloha,
Leslie
Thank you Christin and those who are reviving this sailing series and trophy...I was proud to win this trophy in 2003. Sail on Wahines!!!
